We are located with easy access from all parts of Springfield and surrounding areas. We are next to the Mobile Super Pantry on the east side of MacArthur Blvd, just north of Ash St.
As a locally owned business, we at Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop believe strongly in being active in our community and supporting local causes. Here are just a few of the many groups we support and we encourage others to become involved.
(Click on links for more information about each group.)
Lincoln Memorial Gardens & Nature Center
Wild Birds Unlimited has donated many of the birdfeeders seen outside the Nature Center viewing windows, and provides continual supplies of quality seed and nuts to keep those feeders busy with bird activity. Also look for the Eco-Tough birdhouses (made from recycled materials) throughout the property. Wren houses were donated for the woodlands, along with Bluebird houses for the prairie. These houses have successfully fledged many baby house wrens, bluebirds, and tree swallows.
LMG offers wonderful guided bird hikes on certain Saturdays in the Spring and Fall. Contact them for details.
Springfield Audubon Society, Illinois Audubon Society & Adams Wildlife Sanctuary
Wild Birds Unlimited compliments these groups who work together to educate and preserve our local and state habitats for birds and wildlife. We have donated several birdfeeding staions to be used outside the education room at the newly expanded Adam's WildIife Santuary visitor's centor, and regularly participate in presenting seminars there. If you are a member of Springfield Audubon Society, be sure to let us know. You'll receive special discounts, plus your purchases can help raise funds for SAS. Not a member, but would like to be? Applications are available at Wild Birds Unlimited.
Each year Wild Birds Unlimited hosts a birdfeeder cleaning fundraiser, with proceeds going to help dogs and cats in need.
Over the years, Wild Birds Unlimited has occassionally provided a safe foster home for needy dogs & puppies waiting for new homes.
Canine Companions for Independence
Store owner Wade Kammin is a volunteer puppy raiser for this wonderful group which trains assistance dogs for people with disabilities.
Lincoln Land Community College
In November 2008, Wild Birds Unlimited donated and installed two complete feeding stations and an assortment of foods to LLCC, in coordination with Tony Rothering, the professor of biology and 2008 Pearson Master Teacher who generously donated his $5000 award back to LLCC for construction of two bird viewing blinds. One feeding station is located between the woods and prairie north of Menard Hall, with the second located near the creek and bridge west of Sangamon Hall. Chris Young of the State Journal-Register wrote a very nice article describing the installation day, see article here. The viewing areas are open to the public. Please stop by and show you support while enojoying the birds!
Chris Izatt, LLCC student photographer, took these photos of Goldfinches (in winter plumage) and House Finches just days after the feeders were installed.
Each week, Wild Birds Unlimited's store manager, Sarah Anglum, donates her time to caring for children in the nursery. Every December Wild Birds Unlimited donates merchandise to the Nursery's Holiday Store, which allows children to select items to give as gifts to family members.
Schools, Arts, and Performance Groups
Each year Wild Birds Unlimited provides donations to many local oraganizations that benefit the greater Springfield community.
